McClellan Park Achieves LEED Silver for California Department of Parks and Recreation’s Museum Collection Center

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento, CA – McClellan Park is pleased to announce the completed construction of the 265,282 square foot Consolidated Operations and Museum Collection Center for the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Most notably, the project has been certified LEED Silver.


The State of California Department of General Services signed a lease in 2011 with McClellan Business Park for 265,282 square feet of industrial space and took occupancy in April 2013. The lease also provides 53,000 sf of fenced yard area for vehicle storage and employee parking.


“We’ve completed extensive interior, exterior, and site renovations to accommodate the Department of Parks and Recreation” said Larry Kelley, McClellan Park’s President.  “We’ve completely renovated the building interior to meet Parks’ specific operational requirements, updated the exterior façade to modern standards, and most importantly, upgraded the building’s cooling and humidification controls to assure long term preservation of the historic collections.”


Calpo Hom & Dong Architects, Inc. looked at the project from many angles for reaching LEED Silver Certification, searching for opportunities to apply “Green building” strategies from landscape irrigation to indoor water use, and from efficient energy use to efficient recycled material use. In addition, to assure all design aspects of the project worked as designed and to verify compliance with LEED, a third party commissioner consulted to verify all equipment installed in the facility worked as specified. Other strategies implemented were using renewable resources for all electrical energy, solar reflective roofing, rewards for carpooling and using fuel efficient vehicles and diverting over 95% of on-site construction waste to recycling rather than landfills, CH&D Architects Inc. oversaw and coordinated this LEED certification endeavor.


The rail-served industrial building, formerly used by the U.S. Air Force for material and supply storage purposes, was constructed to a very high standard with eight inch thick concrete walls and a four inch thick concrete ceiling, providing better insulation capacity and significant energy savings.
